From Jobseeker to railway professional - Daniel’s journey with ETS in Slough
In February 2025, ETS delivered a two-week training programme in Slough, funded by the local Department for Work and Pensions (DWP). Designed in direct response to employer demand, the programme aimed to equip local jobseekers with the essential skills and certifications needed to begin careers in the rail and construction industries.
Strategic local collaboration
ETS works closely with Slough Jobcentre Plus to ensure strong candidate engagement. In preparation for the course launch, ETS delivered a tailored information session to work coaches. Additionally, they supplied marketing materials and ran a pre-course engagement day. Attendees heard from a successful former learner, participated in industry presentations and received practical guidance on next steps.
This collaborative approach helped identify and select a cohort of 12 motivated candidates. They were welcomed on Day One with uniforms ready to set the tone for a professional and supportive learning environment.

Community-based training
The course was delivered at the Sikh Community Centre on Bath Road, strengthening community ties and reinvesting directly in the local area. Candidates were supported throughout by Jobcentre Work Coaches, who helped remove common barriers such as travel and childcare support.
Over two weeks, learners completed a rigorous, hands-on programme including:
- Emergency First Aid at Work
- Fire Safety Awareness
- Small Tools (training on 4 tools)
- Personal Track Safety (PTS AC and DCCR)
- Drug & Alcohol Screening and Medical
- PPE Provision
- Employability support (CV writing, interview skills, soft skills
Daniel’s story: a new career begins
Among the learners was Daniel, who had been seeking a new direction and a meaningful career path. Through his dedication and with the tailored support of ETS staff, Daniel completed the programme and transitioned directly into employment.
“Before starting with ETS, I was looking for a chance to improve my skills and find a new direction. The training helped me grow in confidence, learn industry-relevant skills, and feel ready for work. The tutors were supportive and engaging. I appreciated how the course was focused on real jobs and helped me understand what employers are looking for. Through ETS, I connected with opportunities I hadn’t thought possible before.”

The strong partnership working between ETS, DWP, and local community venues was key to the success of the program. Consequently, 9 of the 12 learners who began the program progressed into employment or further opportunities.
ETS continues to work with DWP regions, employers and local partners to unlock potential, support inclusive hiring and build social value through meaningful skills delivery.
